Let's start with managed
care, with pitiful reimbursement, all the paperwork, rigid rules that don't
make sense and bureaucrats who seem specially trained to be as surly as
possible. Not only does it erode your profits, it makes it close to impossible
to practice conscientious, top-quality dentistry.
They have the nerve to call
this stuff "Dental Insurance" when, at best, it's a supplement. I mean think
about it - when "Dental Insurance" got started decades ago it usually covered
about $1,000 worth of work each year. And that's just what it covers today -
long after the price of everything else (including the premiums your patients
or their employers pay) has gone through the roof.
But people got used to the
idea that "Dental Insurance" covered all the dental care they needed, so when
you propose good, sound, NECESSARY care that costs more, they act like you're
trying to rip them off.
All of which is one of the
biggest reasons why you're lying awake at night worrying about how you're going
to pay the bills.
I mean, we're not talking
"Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" here. We're talking about things your
family NEEDS that you simply can't supply.
And that's with you working
so many hours a week you're basically AWOL as a parent. You know kids grow up
awfully fast - and the time you're missing with them is gone for good. You
could wake up one morning (I know lots of dentists who have) and discover that
your adorable little girl or enthusiastic son is now a grown-up stranger who
simply doesn't want to hear it from you.
You and I both know how to
keep that from happening - but it takes time. Lots of time. Time doing stuff
together that you both enjoy. Time talking. Time to tell them how much you love
them and how proud of them you are.
Time you simply can't
afford because your practice is eating you alive.
And then there's retirement.
Today you need a bare minimum of at least Three Million Dollars to retire and
live a decent lifestyle. (Imagine how big a nest egg you'll need in five, ten
or fifteen years.)
If that sounds high to you,
think about it for a minute. When you retire you'll want to do all the fun
things you've been putting off while you worked, right? Like trips to wonderful
places, cruises and long days on top golf courses. But you won't be able to
enjoy those things if you're worried about the SERIOUS MONEY you'll need to
stay as healthy and independent as possible when you're truly old.
Someone, I think it was
Katherine Hepburn, said "old age is not for sissies." And it's not for people
who've run themselves out of money either. Do you have any idea how much it can
cost to keep someone who's frail or ill at home? Or any idea how bad the
alternative - life in a nursing home - can be?
Finally, as if all of that
weren't bad enough, there's the problem of managing a dissatisfied staff and
keeping them from alienating your patients. Not that they aren't good people -
most often they are - but unless you have good business management skills
(which, of course, you weren't taught in dental school) or a practice so
successful you can shower them with money, staff can often seem like an even
bigger hurdle than your most difficult patients.
Look at all these problems
together and it's no wonder you drive to work with anxiety, stress and
depression as your passengers. Day after day after day.
IT SIMPLY HAS TO
STOP!!!
Living like that is a recipe
for disease, divorce, depression and, ultimately, death - if not of your body
then at least of your spirit. That's why it is SO important that you read this
letter -all the way through. Because it's got the answers you need to leave
those kinds of problems behind and start enjoying your profession, your family,
your life and, yes, your serious wealth.
This letter is going to
rearrange your mind - get rid of the doubt, get rid of the depression and fill
you with great ideas and a vision of a life SO GOOD you just can't wait to get
there.
For starters, think about
this:
Contrary to
Popular Belief,
It's Perfectly OK For Dentists to Care About Money -
And Even Better For Them to Make a Ton of It!
Listening to people talk at
your dental society meeting you'd get the idea that everything is OK - that we
don't have payrolls to meet, managed care companies cutting our fees and eating
our lunch, and bank accounts that tell us we'd better not even THINK about
retiring.
Spend some time with your
colleagues AFTER the meeting, though, and you'll hear about the things I talked
about earlier. Like patients who walk away from treatment they really need
because their insurance won't cover every dime, and the way the price of
everything we need is going through the roof (have you LOOKED at your health
insurance premiums lately?) and how our kids are starting to forget our names.
So you're not alone -
although you probably feel that way a whole lot of the time. I
know that's how I felt when my life nearly came unglued a few short years ago.
Alone, and like life had treated me pretty darned unfairly.
After all, I'd gone to one
of the world's really great dental schools. Studied hard, done well, played by
all the rules. But I couldn't make a decent living.
So I worked even harder, put
in more hours, trashed my first marriage and missed most of the fun of my two
older kids growing up. And what did it get me? Nada. I couldn't give my family
the things they needed - including a husband and dad. I couldn't save for the
future.
Eventually I couldn't even
make payroll.
Was I a loser? I didn't
think so - but I know that's what a lot of people called me behind my back.
Rock bottom.
On a cold, drizzly October evening in 1995 sitting in my office, listening to
the rain, I realized I'd reached the end of the line. Not only was my practice
going down the drain, my dad's desperately damaged practice - which I'd been
trying to salvage while watching him die of cancer - was doomed as well. All I
could think of was that I had failed us both.
That afternoon a lawyer told
me I had no choice but to file for bankruptcy.
It was a crummy situation I
wouldn't wish on my worst enemy but I know a lot of dentists - maybe even you -
wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat worrying that they might end
up in a similar position some day soon.
I will say one thing for the
experience, though. Facing the possibility of total financial ruin is a little
like waiting to be hanged - as the wise man said, it does serve to concentrate
the mind.
That's exactly what it did
for me. It made me mad. And it made me determined to learn whatever I needed to
learn and do whatever I needed to do to get out of that hole.
I fired my accountant
and the bankruptcy attorney. Then, with the help and advice of
some very smart people, I managed to not only dig myself out of that hole - I
got myself headed toward absolutely awesome success. In fact, three years
later I was debt free and making three times the average income of a general
dentist while working just one day a week!
